How to create a Gravatar in WordPress super easy and why you should have it

In today’s post I am going to explain something that you have surely heard about many times: gravatar. Sounds like you, right? Surely yes!

When you read the blog comments, next to the name of the person, you will have noticed that some comments have a photo or a logo, but in others a default image (of an anonymous commenter) that is repeated in many comments and, generally, pretty ugly.

You will agree that comments with a “real” personal name make a much better impression than those with the anonymous image, right?

What will you find here?

If you have ever wondered how you can make that photo appear automatically next to your name, when you leave comments on the blog, in this post I will answer that question. But, in addition, you will see that using it has important advantages that I will tell you later.

Creating a gravatar is very simple. I am going to explain it to you step by step, with a practical example, because I think it is the best way to learn how to do it.

Are you ready? Well let’s get started! 🙂

What is a gravatar, what is it not and what is it for
As we said, a gravatar is simply the image that appears next to your name when you write or make a comment on a blog.

There is also often talk of gravatar or avatar with respect to photos in emails, when you participate in an internet forum, etc.

But these last examples are strictly not a gravatar.

“Gravatar” is really an abbreviation of Globally Recognized Avatar (globally recognized avatar in Spanish), a free service provided by Automattic, which is also the company behind WordPress, which has certain consequences that we will see later.

Gravatars work on WordPress and on sites that integrate with the Gravatar service to display user images. That is, on these sites your gravatar will work and on those that do not support this service, it will not work.

The normal thing is that your gravatar is a photo of you although I often see, for example, emails from people who have like gravatar the logo of their company.

This last case is also perfectly correct, but here it is important to be consistent. That is, a person’s name with a photo, perfect; a company name with a logo, perfect too.

In the case of a personal name, a logo would not qualify as incoherent, especially if you have a consolidated personal brand with a logo linked to that personal brand. It can make a lot of sense.

Why should you use a gravatar?
However, as a general guideline, I would recommend using a photo of yourself for that additional plus of closeness and connection with others that a personal photo gives you, which is difficult to achieve otherwise and which will also work very well for your business, if you got it.

Personally, after responding daily to a number of emails and comments, I will tell you that having a gravatar, like having a photo associated with your email account, gives me a feeling of closeness and complicity with the person I am responding to. .

It gives you the impression that you know him a little more and that psychology is very important when we interact on the Internet, whether for business or simply for leisure.

For this reason, bloggers (if you are not an author) like to have comments from people “with a face” much more. And not only for connecting better, but also because good comments (that includes the author’s image) add quality to the blog and we appreciate that very much.

Ultimately, there are several good reasons for you to use a gravatar. I would highlight the following:

A photo in a comment gives a lot more confidence, gives the feeling of dealing with a real person, not with an anonymous “ghost”. There’s really no basis for it (a gravatar can be faked), but our psychology works like this. 🙂
This sense of “real person”, with a real identity, generates a much higher connection with the community.
You convey more professionalism. It portrays you as someone who masters the medium. And if you are the author of a blog, it is totally mandatory. We have seen many times blogs in which the author himself does not use gravatar, it looks horrible!
It makes you recognizable, it has a “branding” effect, something especially interesting when you start c

on your online project (a blog, a YouTube channel, etc.). With good comments on known sites, you will “ring” people and they will also start to be interested in you and visit you.
How to create a gravatar
As I mentioned earlier, Gravatar and WordPress belong to the same company, so if you haven’t yet created an email account in WordPress, the first thing you have to do is create one.

Therefore, before explaining how you can upload your photo to assign it to your email account, I will tell you how to create an account in WordPress.

In both cases, whether you have a WordPress account or not, the first step is to enter the Gravatar website and click on the blue window that appears in the right half of the screen, which says “Create your own gravatar” .

The first thing you have to do is click on the “Create your own gravatar” window.

From here, if you already have a WordPress account, you can go directly to point 2 of this section: If you already have an account on WordPress.com, upload your photo!

1. Create an account on WordPress.com if you don’t already have one
As I was saying, the first step in creating the gravatar is to have an email account in WordPress, to which you associate your image. In this way, every time you use this account in comments, forums, … the image you have chosen when creating the gravatar will automatically appear.

If you have already clicked on the window that I indicated earlier (“Create your own gravatar”), the following will now appear:

This is the page to register or access Gravatar

Once you have entered the requested information (email address, username and password), you will receive the email you just created or the one you choose (you can choose another), a confirmation email, like this one you see in the image:

Notice of sending a confirmation email for the email account you just created on WordPress.com

Now open this email. WordPress welcomes you and asks you, first of all, to Activate your account:

When you have already activated it, another window will appear in which you will see the home page of WordPress.com but with the session started:

Account activated!

2. Upload your photo to Gravatar.com
The first thing you have to do is go to the main screen of the Gravatar website, in the first image of this post, where it asks you to click on “Create your own gravatar”.

You have already clicked, right? Well, now you will see the window asking you to register in Gravatar with a WordPress account. Do not do it; you already have the account created!

Take a good look at the message that appears at the bottom of the window: «Do you already have a WordPress.com account?«. Click there !:

This is the page to register or access Gravatar

Now they ask for your email account details; first of all, your address:

Now enter the address of your WordPress account.

Once you have entered your address, it naturally asks for your password. Enter it and give it to continue.

In the window that now appears, you are confirmed that you do not have a Gravatar associated with that account. It is time to create it, associating an image with it. Click on «Add one by clicking here»:

Click now on the “Add one by clicking here” window, to be able to select the photo you want to use.

It is time to choose the image that you want to use as a gravatar. To do this, you must first choose the place where the image you have chosen is located.

In the example that I show you, I have clicked on «Upload new».

Once the image is selected, this window will open:

Click on «Next» to go to the next step.

You can now see the selected image! Now adjust its size by clicking and moving the little square that appears just above the photo.

If you have already adjusted the size, click on “Crop Image”:

After adjusting the size of the photo, click on “Crop Image” to proceed to the next step.

In the next step, different classifications appear, for your gravatar.

The system has already selected the one that appears first, with the letter “G”; This means that, in some way, it has detected that the image you have chosen is “suitable for all audiences.”

If you want to use a more aggressive image and mark it with the corresponding level, this can be detected with this system by websites and they may decide to moderate it (replace it with a generic logo, for example).

Simply confirm it by clicking on “Set Rating”:

Now click on the window that says “Set Rating” and we continue!

In this window you can already see the image you have selected, together with the email address to which it has to be associated.

As you can see, you also have the option to add more images, other emails, … but I don’t want to deviate from the topic at hand so, to finish, click on “View rating” and we almost have it !:

Almost done! Click now on «View rating» and go to

final step.

And we are already at the end of the process. Now click on “verify” to confirm that the email address that appears in the box is the address you want to associate your gravatar with:

Finally, confirm that this is the address your gravatar will be associated with, by clicking on “verify”.

Bravo, you already have gravatar! Now have a little patience. The system will take between five and ten minutes to handle the entire process. After that time, quickly open your email and tell me if you already see your photo next to your name. 😉

Conclusions
As you may have seen, the process of creating a gravatar is simple, although you have seen several steps.

From now on, every time you participate in the forums, make a comment on the blogs or simply write an email, whoever reads you will see your photo next to your name. Personally, I think that gives the person reading you a much closer image of you.

I hope you liked this post and, above all, that you quickly put into practice what you have learned in it.

If you want to ask me something or make a suggestion, you can do so in the comments, where I hope to see not only your name, but also your face! 😉
